How to Tell if It's Silk
and choose your scarves well
Small Clues to Recognize a Natural and Special Fabric
Silk has something magical. Not only for its softness or the subtle shine it gives off, but also for what it represents: a natural, ancient fabric full of history. However, it is not always easy to recognize it at first glance, especially today, when there are many synthetic fibers that try to imitate its appearance.
In this article, I will tell you some keys to know if a scarf (or any other garment) is really made of silk.
1. The touch: the best clue
Authentic silk is soft, but not slippery like polyester. It has a slightly irregular texture and a fluid drape, with a certain “weight” that makes it move elegantly. If when you touch it you feel that the fabric is too smooth or cold, it may not be natural silk.
2. The shine: subtle, not plastic
One of the wonders of silk is its discreet and changing shine, which reflects light differently depending on the angle. Unlike synthetic fabrics, which usually shine uniformly and artificially, silk has a softer and more organic glow.
3. The fire test (only if necessary)
This method is useful, although we do not recommend it unless you have a small remnant or thread that you can burn carefully. Natural silk, when burned, smells like burnt hair and turns into brittle ash. In contrast, synthetic fibers smell like plastic and melt.
4. The price is also a clue
Although it is not always decisive, silk usually has a higher price than artificial fabrics. If a scarf has a very low price to be silk, it may not be. It is also worth looking at the label or the product description.
5. Trust brands that tell you the truth
At Bonito Mundo, we create twill natural silk printed scarves , a type of silk recognized for its softness and durability. The hand-painted illustrations and watercolors are delicately and professionally printed on the silk. It is a way to unite art and the lightness of this very special fabric.
6. Twill silk: elegance with body and character
Within the different natural silk fabrics, twill is one of the most recognized and valued. It is distinguished by its weave in the form of small diagonals, which gives it a silky touch with body, a fluid drape and a discreet shine, less intense than that of satin, but warmer and more natural.
It is a particularly resistant silk, which allows a great definition in the prints and maintains the intensity of the color over time. That is why we use it in Bonito Mundo for our scarves: because it enhances each illustration and provides a special experience when wearing it.
If you notice that diagonal weave in the backlight, you feel that the fabric is neither too thin nor too thick, and the colors have depth without artificial shine, it is very likely that you are looking at authentic twill silk.
A Twill Silk Scarf to Feel the Authentic
Recognizing silk is learning to look more carefully, to value the details and to connect with what we are wearing. At Bonito Mundo, each scarf is printed on twill natural silk precisely because of everything it offers: beauty, softness, durability and a unique way to accompany you.
If you ever doubt, remember that true silk is not only seen: it is felt.
